Fin dai tempi antichi si trovano notizie di persone e famiglie Modenesi portanti questo cognome che derivò dal luogo di Provenza, probabilmente da Runcalia, località del basso Modenese, ora suddivisa nelle due Ville di Roncaglio di Sopra e di Roncaglio di Sotto. Diedero alla patria Consiglieri, Sapienti e Conservatori al cui ceto spesso si vedono ascritti; diedero pure uomini d'arme, dottori e sacerdoti, come si ha dalle cronache e documenti modenesi. Non è però possibile distinguere sempre le diverse famiglie l'una dall'altra a causa delle omonimie. Nei Cataloghi delle famiglie Modenesi del Ceto Conservatorio del secolo XVII sono iscritte tre o quattro famiglie dei Roncaglia.
