Antica famiglia di Nona, appartenente all'antica nobiltà carnica, passata, agli albori del secolo decimo nono, in Udine ed in Trieste, ove gli attuali rappresentanti della famiglia risiedono, tuttora. Secondi alcuni genealogisti i Girmano di Nonta sarebbero stati, originariamente, dei Rigotti, che avrebbero assunto, sul calar del XVIII secolo, il cognome Gismano, probabilmente, per nobilitarsi sfoggiando, quantomeno nella cognominizzazione, l'antico incarico feudale. Tuttavia, negli spogli effettuati, la famiglia Gismano compare già nelle prime tre decadi del XVII secolo. In data primo agosto 1633, infatti, risulta la menzione di un "magistro Paulo Gesmano de Nonta", in un documento steso a Socchieve. Purtroppo, nel corso del XVIII secolo, lo status di nobiltà dei Gismani andava deteriorandosi. In origine, infatti, i "Gismani" indicavano dei feudali ministeriali, minori dei Patriarchi, i quali possedevano un castello (la famiglia Gismano ne ebbe ben ventitré) ed erano obbligati a fornire un contingente di militari all'esercito.
