Ancient and noble French family, originally from Normandy, of clear and ancestral virtue, that has worldwide spread, over the centuries. According to many genealogists, the origin of this surname should be sought in a variaton of Poinse, name of baptism and patronymic, derived from the Latin name "Pontius", popularized by two saints of the second century. Another branch of the family moved to Woëvre, a natural region of Lorraine in north-eastern France. It forms part of Lorraine plateau and lies largely in the department of Meuse. Family names so old, without any doubt, honour not only the families but also the cities that welcomed them; seems to be, in fact, very worthy the living members of this family which, with much decorum, carry this noble surname, which has had several illustrious persons.
