Herkunft des Familiennamens Windaus, Herkunftsland: Deutschland

Adelsstand: Nobles
Heraldische Spur die Familie: Windaus
Krone des Adels Windaus Ancient and noble German family, with main residence in the Land of Baden-Württemberg, of clear and ancestral virtue, that has worldwide spread, over the centuries. According to what has been handed down, this family, as a reward for valuable services rendered to Charles IV, Holy Roman Emperor, was admitted to the "Briefadel" (lit. "letter of nobility"), the so-called new nobility as opposed to "Uradel", a term coined only in modern times, in reference to noble families whose ancestral lineage can be traced back to before the Middle Ages. Besides, this family, in all ages, always stood out, thanks to the prominent figures, which gave birth, in the public service, in the liberal professions and in the military service. Among these, without undervalue the omitted, we would like to mention: Adolf, landowner in Baden-Württemberg, flourishing in 1509; Gerard, captain of arms, flourishing in 1526; Friedrich, doctor in both laws, flourishing in... Fortsetzung folgtStuttgart, in 1532; Heinrich, military doctor, flourishing in Stuttgart, in 1535; Thomas, landowner in Baden-Württemberg, flourishing in 1582; Hans Friedrich, jurist, flourishing in Stuttgart, in 1612; Wolfgang, landowner in Baden-Württemberg, flourishing in 1631; Hans, general of cavalry, under the banners of Charles VI. To a collateral branch of the family belongs Adolf Otto Reinhold Windaus (25 December 1876 – 9 June 1959), chemist. Windaus received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1928, on account of his work on the constitution of sterols and their connection with vitamins. Among the many honours he was awarded were the Pasteur Medal (1938), the Goethe Medal (1941), also the "Groszes Verdienstireuz" (Grand Order of Merit) in 1951, and the "Groszes Verdienstkreuz mit Stern" (Grand Order of Merit with Star) in 1956. In addition he was recipient of the Order pour le Merite, Peace Class, in 1952. He was also honorary doctor of the Universities of Göttingen, Munich, Freiburg, and Hanover. Professor Windaus married Elisabeth Resau in 1915. There were three children by his marriage: Günter (b. 1916), Gustav (b. 1918) and Margarete (b. 1921). Family names so old, without any doubt, honour not only the families but also the cities that welcomed them; seems to be, in fact, very worthy living members of this family which, with much decorum, carry this noble surname, which has had several illustrious persons.
