This surname is of toponymic origin. That therefore means that this family originates from Halden (in German "ab der Halden" means "from Halden), once an autonomous municipality of the the Canton of Thurgau, in the Weinfelden district, but today part of the municipality of Bischofszell. From there took origin the many family lines that then spread mainly in the Cantons Obwalden and Schwyz. Of the latter a Heinrich, in 1572, was elected Landammann (= the elected judge and leader of the Landsgemeinde), the German title used by the chief magistrate in certain Cantons of Switzerland.
