Sulla base di quanto afferma Goro Stendardi, in un suo noto saggio sulle antiche famiglie patrizie pisane, e di quanto concordano il Mugnos e l'Inveges, possiamo affermare che il ramo originario del casato, benché alcuni lo vogliano in Veneto, sia nativo di Pisa, al cui patriziato trovasi ascritto sin dal XII secolo.
