Esta família é muito antiga em Espanha e parece que o primeiro a usar o apelido foi Pelaio de Aguilera. A família tem a mesma origem dos Aguiares. D. Gonçalo Anes, bisneto de D. Pedro Mendes de A., o primeiro deste apelido, e de sua mulher, foi rico-homem de Portugal e, depois, em Castela, aonde passou no reinado de D. Fernando, o Santo. Valido do Rei D. Afonso, o Sábio, a quem serviu no sítio de Sevilha, dele teve a mercê de terras na Andaluzia, a que, segundo dizem escritores antigos, deu o nome de Aguilar, tirado do seu apelido, a que também deu forma espanhola. Este ilustre cavaleiro morreu valorosamente combatendo os Mouros na Veiga de Granada no ano de 1283, junto do Infante D. Sancho, a quem salvou a vida. O Rei lhe deu para seu jazigo e de sues descendentes a capela real de Córdova, onde o sepultaram. Casou com D. Berenguela de Cardona, filha dos sextos Viscondes de Cardona, e deles ficou geração, da qual saíram os Aguilares de Portugal e Espanha. Da antiga e ilustre família dos Guedes procedeu a dos Aguiares, que tomou o apelido do senhorio de Aguiar, na província de Trás-os-Montes, e o primeiro a usá-lo foi D. Mendo Peres de Aguiar, que casou com D. Maior Garcia de Portocarreiro e viveu em tempo de D. Alfonso Henriques, dele vindo os que assim se chamaram. Desta família saiu a dos Aguilares, muito qualificada em Espanha.
