Si chiamò anticamente Sandretti e si trasferì a Imola dal Borgo di Tossignano, ove nel sec. XVI viveva Marcone Sandretti, un cui diretto discendente, Orlando, ebbe, tra altri figli, don Gio. Girolamo (1658-1744 ) ricordato come insigne giureconsulto, e Alessandro (1661-1737 ) capitano d'una compagnia di fanti nelle milizie papali. Da Giuseppe figlio di quest'ultimo, avvocato, ammesso al numero dei consiglieri d'Imola il 12 ottobre 1735, priore della nobile società imolese dei Novanta Pacifici, nacquero nel 1729 Antonio continuatore della famiglia, e nel 1738 mons. Alessandro consolidatore della di lei fortuna. Questi fu dapprima gesuita; poi, soppresso l'ordine, divenne canonico camerlengo, vicario generale del vescovo di Imola, vicario apostolico a Comacchio, vescovo di Zama, e infine, nel 1796, vescovo di Macerata e Tolentino, dalla qual dignità si dimise, per motivi di salute, nel 1800.
