(Alforde in Domesday Book), of which the first element is either from the Old English word 'alor' meaning Alder or '(e)alh' meaning temple, shrine. There is also a place of the same name in the former county of Aberdeen, in Scotland (now part of the Grampian region), which may lie behind some Scottish examples of the surname.
