D'aucuns veulent lui donner Compiègne ou Abbeville pour patrie. Il semble plus rationnel de le faire sortir d'une maison picarde, ayant pour tige Robert vivant vers 1091 et avec laquelle, il y a du moins, quelque analogie d'armoiries. Cette ancienne famille qui a joué un rôle prépondérant dans l'histoire de la noblesse française, a fourni une foule de personnages illustres dès le XIIème siècle. A ce nom, on attribue un signe distinctif de noblesse représenté par le blason que l'on reproduit ci-dessous et qui confirme aussi à travers ses emblêmes, au point de vue historique et héraldique, l'assurance d'une valeur remarquable.
