Zurita, el eminente analista de Aragón, y los cronistas de Cataluña, Rivera y Feliu de la Peña, hacen honorífica mencion de esta nobilísima familia, llena de méritos y honores y una de las mas exornadas de privilegios y prerogativas de aquel antiguo reino. Su orígen se pierde en las tinieblas de los siglos mas remotos, y en el pueblo de Biescas, en Aragón, fué el distinguido solar de tan calificado linage, de donde salieron varones muy esclarecidos en virtud, letras y armas. Pero siendo el principal objeto de esta reseña dar a conocer la rama de este ilustre linaje que se estableció en las Islas Baleares, nos concrearemos a dar aquí una sucinta relacion de sus mas notables hijos y de sus principales merecimientos. Ramon de M. natural de Biescas, en Aragón, acompañó los católicos pendones de Don Jaime I en la conquista de Mallorca, que tuvo lugar en 1229. Fueron tan señalados sus servicios, que al remunerárselos el Conquistador con la donacion de pingües heredades, se expresa en estos términos: "Propter multa servitia idonea et fructuosa nobis præstita in expugnatine regni Mayoricarum". A estos mismos servicios debió tambien Montaner el título perpétuo de caballero con que le favoreció Don Jaime en virtud de privilegio dado en Lérida en el mes de Abril de 1232. Ramon de Montaner, hijo del referido Ramon, se halló en la conquista de Mallorca y luego pasó a la de Valencia, por cuyos servicios al rey Don Jaime le armó caballero en virtud de privilegio dado en Játiva. Son sus armas: Cuartelado; el primero y el cuarto de oro y un castillo sobre un montecillo; el segundo y el tercero de plata y tres fajas ondeadas de sable; bordura de azur y ocho estrellas de oro; sobre el todo escuson de oro y un monte flordelisado.
