Nobility crown AmbiaAntiguo y noble apellido gallego. Tuvo su primitivo solar en la fortaleza de Armáriz, en la hoy parroquia del mismo nombre, perteneciente al Ayuntamiento de Junquera de A. y partido judicial de Orense. Dice Gándara en su "Nobiliario de Galicia" que el linaje de los Ambias procede del rico-home Gonzalo Froila, que floreció por los años de 965, en tiempos de Don Ramiro III. Este caballero, en unión de su mujer Ildura, fundó el convento y priorato de Junquera de A., que primero fué convento patrimonial y luego iglesia colegial de Canónigos regulares de San Agustín, estando anejo su priorato a la hoy archidiócesis de Valladolid, por ser de patrimonio Real. Ese caballero era pariente cercano de los Condes de Celanova y de San Rosendo. El matrimonio tuvo numerosa sucesión, que dió origen a dos familias ilustres de Galicia: la de los Ambias y la de los Sotelos. De la primera hizo título el Conde D. Pedro en su "Nobiliario", y comienza en D. Paio o Payo Arias de A., que casó con doña María González, hija de Gonzalo Rodríguez; pero en las notas que Juan Bautista Lavaña puso a dicho "Nobiliario", se añade que el libro antiguo del Conde D. Pedro dice que con quien casó este D. Payo Arias de A. fué con doña María Rodríguez (hija de Rodrigo Alonso, del linaje de Bayón, y de su mujer doña María Gómez de Silva), naciendo de esa unión Pedro Páez de A. Arias Páez de A. y Marina Páez. ...
