Antica e nobilissima famiglia toscana, originaria di Firenze ma con residenza anche in Pistoia ed in Pescia, propagatasi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni d'Italia. Secondo quanto ci viene tramandato, essa discende dall'antica casa dei Beccanugi ed era divisa in due rami. Il primo dal 1284 al 1494 ebbe per ben quattro volte il gonfalonierato e per 39 il priorato. Il secondo ottenne il priorato nelle persone di Giovanni di Conte nel 1366 e 1372 e di Conte, suo figliuolo, nel 1390 e nel 1401. Quest'ultimo fu inoltre Gonfaloniere nel 1398. Questo secondo ramo era passato a risiedere in Pistoia. Ivi gli Ammannati possederono un grandioso palazzo, ove stabilirono la loro banca o ragione, la quale nel 1304 era così florida che dalla sola Corona d'Inghilterra si teneva creditrice di 150.000 fiorini.
