La famiglia Arces, di nobilissima origine spagnola, trasse poi stabile dimora nella città di Messina, ove godette di riconosciuta nobiltà attraverso i secoli XVI, XVII e XVIII. Nella Mastra Nobile redatta dal Mollica si rinviene annotato un Giovanni, iscritto nella lista X dell’anno 1596. La medesima casata fu altresì ascritta alla nobile Arciconfraternita della Pace e dei Bianchi della suddetta città. Un egregio rappresentante del lignaggio, Matteo, rivestì la dignità di capitano d’armi e, nell’anno 1646, acquisì dalla Regia Corte alcune tande, unitamente a un titolo baronale. A costui succedette la figlia Vittoria, la quale contrasse matrimonio con un esponente della famiglia Prestigiovanni, generando un’unica erede, Valentina Prestigiovanni ed Arces, alla quale fu conferito in dote il predetto titolo di barone. Lo storico e araldista Mugnos, di venerata memoria, così si esprime intorno alla famiglia Arces: "nobile di Aragona. Un ramo di essa passò in Sicilia stabilendo sua dimora in Messina ove fiorì un Matteo d'Arces capitan d'arme del Val Demone". ...
