L’antichissima e nobilissima famiglia Arese, di chiara origine milanese, si distingue fin dai secoli XIV e XV per aver annoverato tra le sue schiere numerosi decurioni, uomini di senno e di pubblica virtù. Tra essi si ricorda Bartolomeo, vivente nell’anno del Signore 1588, il quale fu annoverato tra i Dodici di Provvisione, e generò Marco Antonio, che fu senatore illustre; da costui nacque Giulio, spentosi nell’anno 1627, il quale, già presidente del Senato, lasciò scritti di nota erudizione, menzionati dall’Argelati nella sua opera "Bibliotheca Scriptorum Mediolanensium" (Tomo I, parte seconda, p. 90 e seguenti). Da Giulio venne alla luce un altro Bartolomeo (1590-1674), il quale, per meriti e fedeltà, fu da Sua Maestà Re Filippo IV insignito del titolo comitale con diploma datato 11 marzo 1627. Costui fu tra i Quaranta Decurioni, Capitano di Giustizia nell’anno 1636, Presidente del Magistrato Ordinario, e nel 1649 fu elevato alla dignità di Reggente del Supremo Consiglio d’Italia, per poi, nel 1660, giungere alla somma carica di Presidente del Senato.
