El ilustre apellido Balas halla su origen, según antiguos historiadores y registros de archivo, entre los siglos XI y XIV. Su escudo, o uno muy semejante, se vio por vez primera en las celebraciones de 1219 junto al monasterio de las Huelgas (Burgos), con motivo del nombramiento como caballero del infante Fernando III, hijo de Alfonso VIII y de Doña Leonor de Plantagenet. Desde el siglo XV hasta el XIX, abundan las menciones a esta casa, especialmente en el año 1554, cuando miembros de la familia escoltaron al príncipe Felipe, hijo del emperador Carlos I, desde La Coruña hasta Southampton para su boda con Doña María Tudor, reina de Inglaterra, conocida por su severidad.
