Ist seit 1270 Beiname derer von Hohenheim und ist ein Übername, der vom Handel mit Baumwolle oder von einer Vorliebe für diesen damals noch vielbegehrten Stoff ausgeht. Die Formen Bombast und Bambast, die gleichzeitig auftreten, entwickeln sich aus dem mittellateinischen Bombax und Bambax wie gleichzeitig italienisch bambagio und altfranzösisch bambais - mittelhochdeutsch boumwolle, eben erst im 12. Jahrhundert aufgekommen, war damals noch ein seltenes Wort. Neben Bombast und Bambast treten auch Bonbast und Banbast (1272) auf, 1285 Bomeiß, 1299 Bambeist, später Bambassei, worin man das spätmittelhochddeutsch bombasîn (gleich Baumwolle) erkennt. 200 Jahre später ist der Name zu Bommas abgeschliffen und wird schließlich zu Baumbast umgedeutet.

Obwohl keine sicheren Angaben zur Datierung des geschichtlichen Ursprungs und zu seiner Zuordnung zu einem bestimmten Gebiet vorhanden sind, ist ein Nachweis des Adels über die Deutung des Wappens möglich.
