Tanto della famiglia Barbanti, che della famiglia Silva si hanno notizie da documenti dell'Archivio Storico della biblioteca municipale di Correggio, dal principio del secolo XVII. Più antiche notizie però si hanno della famiglia Barbanti, che sarebbe proveniente dal vicino paese di Fabbrico. Come capostipite è ricordato Joannes "dictus Barbanto de Alemania", vivente nel 1498, che ebbe due figli: Giovan Quirino e Giovan Galeazzo. Da essi vennero due rami della famiglia: quello di Giovan Quirino ebbe un canonico Gian Jacopo, e dopo tre generazioni si estinse coi fratelli Fra Angelo, carmelitano e Fra Gregorio dei Zoccolanti. L'altro ramo continuò la famiglia, ed aggiunse il cognome Silva, in seguito a matrimonio ed eredità. Gian Galeazzo suddetto, vivente nel 1529, fu Podestà di Fabbrico.
