Bencomo était l'un des cinq rois guanches de Tenerife, qui se sont rendus le 25 juillet 1496, mettant ainsi fin à la conquête des îles Canaries. Ce nom de famille s'est lié aux principales familles des îles Canaries, donnant des enfants illustres au pays. Parmi eux, on peut compter Don Cristóbal Bencomo qui est né à La Laguna le 30 août 1758, a étudié au couvent de San Francisco de La Laguna, était professeur de latin et précepteur du roi Fernando VII, qui était un enfant et est mort à Séville le 15 avril 1835. Pendant la guerre d'indépendance, il se retira à Tenerife et en 1814 il retourna à Madrid appelé par le roi, dont la faveur augmenta, obtenant avec son influence la création de l'évêché de Tenerife.
