His descendants gave life to two family branches: one went to Holland, the other to Spain. The Dutch branch distinguished itself for having given birth to many scientists and artists, especially since the seventeenth century. The first character of which there is certain historical memory is the Dutch Protestant Leon Bernoulli, who worked as a doctor in Antwerp. His son Jacob Bernoulli emigrated around 1570 for reasons of faith to Frankfurt am Main. Jacob's grandson settled in Basel around in the year 1620 and there acquired, two years later, the civil rights.
