Antica ed illustre famiglia, originaria del Friuli Venezia Giulia, di chiara ed avita virtù, propagatasi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni d'Italia. L'origine di tal cognominizzazione, al dir di illustri genealogisti, andrebbe ricercata in un soprannome, basato, a sua volta, sul vocabolo dialettale friulano "brovada", indicante un particolare cibo locale a base di rape messe sotto vinaccia, probabilmente, ad indicare che un, oggi ignoto, capostipite fosse un produttore di tal tipo di preparato alimentare. In ogni modo, tal casato ottenne il cavalierato, dal Senato della Serenissima Repubblica di Venezia, in ricompensa dell'impresa, cui parteciparono un Luigi ed un Federico Brovedani, nativi di Capodistria, ma residenti in Udine, nel 1447, compiuta con il respingere le truppe dell'arciduca d'Austria Sigismondo, aldilà dei confini della Repubblica.
