I Caflisch sono stirpe antica e illustre, le cui radici affondano nelle terre della Svizzera tedesca, da cui, sin dal tardo XVIII secolo, si propagarono in diverse contrade d'Italia e d'Europa. In origine annoverati tra la nobiltà rurale, furono accolti nell'ordine cavalleresco già prima del 1403, giacché in un atto di tal anno si menziona un cavaliere Franz Caflisch tra i *Landesadel*, ovvero quei nobili che, al servizio delle autorità territoriali, rappresentavano l'élite cavalleresca del tempo. Né venne mai meno, nei secoli a venire, il lustro di tal famiglia, che generò uomini insigni e degni di memoria. Fra costoro, si rammenta il dottor Bartholomäus, medico e naturalista, autore di numerosi trattati, attivo in Amburgo nell'anno 1567; Karl e Joseph, che militarono nel concilio militare associato, istituito dalla Dieta federale per difendere la neutralità svizzera, minacciata dalle forze protestanti straniere nel 1633 e nel 1638, durante la cruenta Guerra dei Trent'anni; il dottor Rudolf, esperto in *utroque iure*, operante in Ginevra nel 1678; Balthasar, che resse la carica di vice balivo in Friburgo nel 1698; Philipp, banchiere di Berna, vivente nel 1742; don Matteo, canonico, teologo e commissario apostolico, attivo in Trieste nel 1772; padre Arnold, dell'Ordine dei Predicatori, anch'egli presente in Trieste nel 1789; infine don Paolo, che nell'aprile del 1844 ricoprì la dignità di Primo Tenente del Cantone dei Grigioni. Non v'ha dubbio alcuno che cognomi di sì vetusta origine rechino onore non solo ai casati che li portano, ma altresì alle città che li accolsero. E ben si dice che i discendenti tuttora viventi di questa famiglia, con decoro e dignità, sostengano il peso e la gloria di un nome che, nei secoli, ha dato i natali a uomini illustri e meritevoli. ...
