Originari di Alessandria. Che discendano dai Savelli romani è fiaba, per quanto attestata legalmente, in un documento del 1562, dal comune di Alessandria. Possedevano l'onorifico incarico di custodire una delle chiavi dell'arca che racchiude la reliquia del Santo Legno, venerata nella cattedrale di Alessandria, reliquia che testimonianze documentarie riportano ad un atto consolare del 21 dicembre 1208. Ancora l'8 gennaio 1851 una sentenza della Corte d'Appello di Casale confermava il diritto di custodia a Giovanni Angelo di Montalero. La genealogia ottenibile della famiglia si inizia con Tommaso, signore di Sezzè (1310). Da lui, attraverso tre generazioni, discende Beltramo, signore di Cascina Grossa e padre di Giovanni Bartolomeo, cavaliere aurato. Costui procreò Marc'Antonio, capostipite della linea di Monleale, che entrò in famiglia sul principio del secolo XVIII per le ragioni dotali di Ottavia Tortona, moglie di Giovanni Bartolomeo (deceduto 1728).
