Hay distintas familias de este apellido. Una es originaria de Génova, y escribe Agustín Justiniano en su historia que, cuando en el año de 1528 redujo la Señoría de Génova su nobleza a veintiocho casas y familias nobles, en amistad y confederación para su reforma, con orden de que todas las demás se incluyesen en ellas usando de sus apellidos, fué la familia C. una de las que figuró entre las veintiocho citadas. Otra distinta tuvo noble solar en el Valle de Camargo, del partido judicial de Santander, morando sus líneas en los lugares de Revilla y Herrera, del Valle de Camargo, en el Valle de Castañeda y en el Valle de Piélagos. Otra pasó a la villa de Chinchón (Madrid), y otra a la de Pedraza de Campos (Palencia). Por una probanza ad perpetuam rei memoriam, hecha el 30 de Diciembre de 1572, contra la siguiente genealogía de la línea santanderina de C., que quedó establecida en la villa de Chinchón (Madrid). Rodrigo Gutiérrez C., hijo del solar del Valle de Camargo, casó con doña María Díez de Ceballos y fueron padres de Rodrigo Gutiérrez C.. ...
