I primi riferimenti al casato li rinveniamo nel territorio di Amalfi ove un Urso, del fu Mastalo Campanile, con atto del 9 aprile 1130, dona a sua moglie Anna alcuni beni in Tramonti. In età angioina i Tramonti sono affermati notai, operanti maggiormente in Amalfi. Ma nel XIII secolo un ramo era già passato in Ravello. Nel 1275, infatti, la famiglia è qualificata in Ravello con il titolo di "sire" (“Sire Galganus Campanilis de Ravello in anno 1273, e Sire Angelus Campanilis de Ravello in anno 1430”) e tale era la sua ricchezza che poteva prestare denari al re Carlo I d'Angiò.
