L'origine di tal cognominizzazione, al dir di illustri genealogisti, andrebbe ricercata nell'omonimo personale medioevale, arcaismo del nome "Fanciullo" e variante del più comune "Fante", appartenuto, probabilmente, ad un, oggi ignoto capostipite. Tal casato, nel suo ramo principale, residente nel Logudoro, ottenne il riconoscimento della generosità nel 1453, con un Pantaleo, di Siligo. Il ramo residente in Cagliari, invece, ottenne il cavalierato ereditario e la nobiltà, da Re Vittorio Emanuele, nel 1800, con un Giuseppe Maria, reggente del marchesato di Quirra: "Il Re di Sardegna, di Cipro e di Gerusalemme, Duca del Genevese Fratello mio amatissimo. La lodevole condotta tenuta da Giuseppe Maria Fancello di Cagliari nella lunga dimora fatta in Torino, le prove di sincero attaccamento a Noi, ed al Nostro Governo date più volte unite all'ottima disposizione, con cui si è sempre ...
