L'origine di tal cognominizzazione, al dir di autorevoli genealogisti, andrebbe ricercata in una modificazione del cognomen latino "Canisius", probabilmente, portato da un, oggi ignoto, capostipite. In ogni modo, tal nobil casato, il quale risulta presente in Genova, sin dal XII secolo, in ogni epoca, sempre è riuscito a distinguersi, grazie agli elevati personaggi, a cui ha dato i natali.
