Antica e notabile famiglia veneta, di chiara e avita virtù, propagatasi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni d'Italia. Secondo quanto ci viene tramandato, essa discende dal nobile casato decurionale Canevesi di Milano, già patrizio nel 1774. Benché estinto nel ramo primogenito, il predetto casato, ha continuato a fiorire nelle diramazioni collaterali, alcune delle quali, come nel caso dei Caneve di cui trattiamo, mutarono parzialmente cognome, sia per distinguersi, sia per fenomeni di fonetica dialettale. I Caneve risultano presenti in territorio veneto sin almeno dal tardo secolo decimo settimo ed i suoi rappresentanti sempre si distinsero nella gestione delle cose cittadine come nell'esercizio delle professioni liberali. Inizialmente però si affermarono in qualità di proprietari terrieri.
