Secondo quanto ci viene tramandato, essa discende dal nobile casato siciliano, di origine spagnola, Caprera. Bernardo Caprera e de Fois, uno dei primi signori della Catalogna, visconte di Caprera, passò infatti in Sicilia sotto re Martino, divenendo gran giustiziere del regno. Nel tardo XVI secolo, un Corrado Caprera ricevette il titolo di regio cavaliere e vuolsi che sia stato proprio costui a portare la famiglia in Puglia, avendo ivi ricevuto in dono alcuni territori. Nel tempo, il cognome mutò sino all'odierna forma "Caprarese". Non stupisca tale variazione: essa era un fenomeno assai frequente nel diramarsi di un casato.
