Vantano i Capurso discendenza dai potenti Conti di Marsi e presero il nome dal feudo che ebbero in signoria. Capurso, infatti, è una terra in provincia di Bari, situata in pianura, avente antiche mura ed il palazzo baronale fabbricato a guisa di castello. Il feudo di Capurso appartenne fino dal 1277 alla stirpe dei D'Aponte, originata dai Conti di Marsi. Un ramo di questa Casata, che si assunse il diretto controllo dell'amministrazione del suo feudo di Capurso finì per essere chiamata con questo nome nel 1282 circa. I suoi progenitori riconoscevano per capostipite Berengario, primo Conte di Marsi nell'anno 850, il quale era della stirpe dei Carlovingi.
