L'origine di tal cognominizzazione, al dir di molti genealogisti, sarebbe riconducibile all'antica Gens Caria. Che la famiglia abbia goduto nobiltà in territorio francese è testimoniato dalla presenza della stessa ne "L'Armorial General", di J.B. Rietstap, ove, inoltre, ne vengono riportati i titoli nobiliari, ossia: segretari reali, nel 1750, conti, dal 1814 e baroni, dal 1860.
