Antica ed assai nobile famiglia toscana, di chiara ed avita virtù, propagatasi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni d'Italia. In Toscana, la famiglia ebbe residenza in Firenze ed in Colle Val d'Elsa da donde però un ramo si portò in Pescia. Riguardo l'origine di tal cognominizzazione vi sono due ipotesi: la prima la vedrebbe come forma aferetica e diminutiva del nome di origine germanica Riccardo; la seconda legata alla produzione dei cardi, elemento che compare anche nello stemma del ramo di Pescia. Questo stemma si trova anche partito con quello della famiglia Orlandi, legata ai Cardini da un dispositivo testamentario (cfr. fasc. 3473): lo scudo partito reca anche il capo caricato del motto COL TEMPO. Secondo il Puccinelli (Puccinelli, 1662), la famiglia, originaria di Colle Val d'Elsa, lasciò in eredità il nome e l'arma agli Orlandi di Pescia nel XV secolo.
