Fu detta anticamente Del Sasso da Carmine, per un castello da essa edificato sopra il sasso di Carmine. Col tempo si appellò semplicemente Carmine. Uberto e Giovanni fautore di Ottone Visconti, furono da lui creati cittadini milanesi, dando loro il privilegio di inquartare nello stemma gentilizio la biscia viscontea. Giovan-Francesco dottor di legge scrisse la storia di Cannobio e delle sue famiglie. Una diramazione costruì una chiesetta dedicata alla Vergine Maria. Verso il 1150 finalmente si organizzarono a vita comune e si ebbero dei monasteri carmelitani che, col ritorno dei crociati, si moltiplicarono anche in occidente e precisamente in Sicilia ed in Inghilterra.
