Antica ed assai nobile famiglia, di confessione cristiano melchita, originaria dell'altopiano siriano di Hauran. Nel XV secolo, la famiglia passò a risiedere in Damasco, ove i suoi membri acquisirono sempre più autorità e prestigio, tanto che il popolo attribuì loro l'appellativo di "Pharaon" (= colui che ispira paura). Giuseppe ed Antonio nacquero entrambi a Damasco: il primo nel 1721 ed il secondo nel 1745. Da costoro trassero origine i due rami del casato. Giuseppe, infatti, ebbe il titolo di conte palatino pontificio per Breve di papa Pio VI (13 aprile 1796) e di cavaliere del S.R.I. mf. dall'imperatore Francesco II, con diploma 10 novembre 1798. Il Pontefice Pio VII, poi, a Michele, di Giuseppe, con Brevi 4 maggio e 13 agosto 1802, concedeva il titolo di marchese, trasmissibile ad ambo i sessi. Questi titoli vennero riconosciuti ai sottodescritti con Decreto Ministeriale 22 febbraio 1893, ai figli di Eugenio, di Michele, ...
