Si narra che questa famiglia abbia avuto origine dalla Germania, da un Alberto, figlio di Ridolfo, Signore di Norimberga, noto nel 910. Da lui nacque Guglielmo, prode guerriero, segnalatosi, anche, nelle lettere e nella politica che, insieme al figlio Alberto, fu fatto prigioniero da Tessone, Re d'Ungheria; tanto che vennero incarcerati insieme, nella città di Cassow. Morto il padre in quelle prigioni, Alberto riuscì drammaticamente a fuggire, e dopo aver peregrinato 4 anni, nel 920 giunse a Pavia, ospitatovi da Rodolfo, duca di Borgogna. Ma per circostanze avventurose anche da Pavia dovette fuggire, dopo aver ucciso in duello Tigrano Matiscon, intimo del Duca, e si ricoverò a Venezia. Là si distinse per il suo valore, fu aggregato alla cittadinanza nobile veneziana e nel 925 sposò Calidonia, erede di una cospicua fortuna.
