Nobility crown CastagnaAntichissimo e nobile casato ligure, originario della città di Genova, divisosi in molti rami che, nel dispiegarsi dei lustri, si sono propagati in molte regioni d'Italia. Quello portatosi in Roma ha dato i natali al pontefice Urbano VII. Il ramo napoletano ha avuto invece la baronia di Sessano e in esso è fiorito quel Nicola Castagna, podestà di Sassuolo nel 1465. Ma il primo ramo ad essersi portato fuori dalla Liguria fu quello che trovò dimora in Sicilia e, più precisamente in Messina, città ove appare radicato sin dal 1230, con un Antonio, giurato di Messina. Niccolò Castagna, tesoriere generale del regno, in data 16 gennaio 1397, ebbe concessa la terra di Saponara; nel 1399 ebbe confermati i casali di Bavuso, Calvaruso, Maurogiovanni e S.
