Antica ed assai nobile famiglia spagnola, di chiara ed avita virtù, la quale risulta divisa in due rami principali: l'uno passato in Istria, e successivamente in Veneto ed in Friuli, e l'altro passato primieramente in Piemonte, e successivamente nello Stato Pontificio. Il ramo istriano ivi giunse nel secolo decimo terzo e fu detto Castri, Castris o de Castro. Questo ramo ha goduto del titolo marchionale, in virtù del marchesato di Castignolo "sive Albucano", che dal 1212 fu suo feudo patriarchino, riconosciuto e riconfermato nel 1334 anche da Venezia.
