On trouve le nom de cette maison diversement écrit Chauchat, Chalchat ou Calcat. Haute bourgeoisie que l'on trouve au Puy et à Clermont depuis Pierre Chalcat témoin en mai 1163, d'une donation à l'hôpital St-Jean du Puy, par Pierre de Mirmande et Guillaumette sa femme. Autre Pierre Chalchat, était prieur de la Bajasse et de la Trinité en 1223. Gèrald Chalchat ou Chaucat, possédait fief à Chamalières près Clermont en 1289. Jean Chaucat, valet de chambre du roi Philippe le Bel (1306), fut anobli par ce prince en 1319. Géraud, son frère aîné etait panetier du même monarque en 1309. Géraud III et Louis Chauchat, sgr. de Fontanat près Royat, trésorier d'Auvergne en 1324, furent anoblis en 1319. Rousset Chauchat, devint chanoine de la Cathédrale de Clermont vers 1330. La postérité de Louis, possessionnée en Bourbonnais et en Auvergne, a donné en 1370 un capitaine de Clermont et s'est éteinte dans cette ville au XVème siècle. Jean Chauchat, receveur général des aides en Languedoc (1385), continua la branche du Velay à laquelle appartenaient: Mathieu Chauchat, trésorier de la ville du Puy (1498); Messire Jean Chauchat, docteur ès droits, premier consul du Puy (1533); et autre Mathieu Chauchat, docteur et avocat au Puy en 1544. A la fin du XVIème siécle, cette famille s'établit dans la vallée de l'Allier près d'Alleyras, puis à Langeac. Elle a en outre fourni de nombreux notaires et avocats en parlement, ainsi qu'un chanoine inscrit sur la liste des émigrés de la Haute-Loire, en réclusion au Puy (1794). Nobles alliances. ...
