On trouve le nom de cette maison aussi écrit Delachaud. Noblesse de St-Bonnet-le-Château, où habitait Hugon de la Chau, damoiseau, dont la terre relevait en fief du seigneur de St-Bonnet en 1290. Peu après, cette famille passa par désuétude dans l'ordre de la bourgeoisie, où elle ne cessa d'ailleurs de tenir un rang distingué. Arcyone de Chàlus de la Roche était veuve en 1390 de Jean de la Chau qui avait rendu hommage en 1351 d'une rente noble. Jean, est inscrit en 1403, au terrier de St-Bonnet-le-Chàteau. On trouve messire Claude, bayle et syndic des prètres de l'église de Monlet près Allègre, le 11 février 1540. Deux branches se fixèrent à cette époque à Chassaigne et à Lamothe près Brioude. On trouve aussi sous ce nom: des notaires royaux; des avocats en parlement en 1631; un bailli de Servières; un bailli de Rilhac. La branche aînée éteinte fin du XVIIIème siècle. A ce nom, on attribue un signe distinctif de noblesse représenté par le blason que l'on reproduit ci-dessous et qui confirme aussi à travers ses emblêmes, au point de vue historique et héraldique, l'assurance d'une valeur remarquable.
