Sulla sua origine divergono gli araldisti. Alcuni la vogliono di origine spagnola e anticamente nota come Cerulla. Nota sin da tempi antichissimi, la famiglia Cerulla vuolsi giunta nel Regno di Napoli al seguito dei re aragonesi, da quali si narra abbia ricevuto feudi in ricompensa dei servigi ricevuti. Altri la sovrappongono invece alla famiglia Cerulin originaria di Creta, la quale servì le armate veneziane a Monemvassia (Peloponneso) nella prima metà del XVI secolo. Dopo la conquista turca di questa piazza nel 1541, un Manusso Cerulin si rifugiò a Creta e conquistata pure questa dai Turchi nel 1669, si rifugiò dapprima Venezia indi a Corfù.
