Antica ed illustre famiglia, originaria del territorio di Genova, propagatasi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni d'Italia e di Europa. L'origine di tal cognominizzazione, al dir di illustri genealogisti, andrebbe ricercata in un soprannome, originatosi, a sua volta, sopra il termine dialettale ligure "ghersu" (= guercio), indicante, probabilmente, che i capostipiti soffrissero di questa menomazione.
