Fin dal 1100 si hanno in Siena memorie della fam., col nome di conti dell'Ardenghesca, che possedevano uno Stato nel senese con molte rocca e castella. Ranunzio ed Anselmo furono signori del castello di Macerata. Divisa in due rami, dal primo fu continuata in Siena la casa stessa, che poi si immedesimò in quella di Zondadari, e dal secondo ebbe origine la linea di Roma fregiata dal pontefice Alessandro VII del titolo di princ. di Farnese e di Campagnano, di duca di Ariccia e di signora di Cesano, di Magliano, Scrofano. E' rimasta ereditaria dal 1712 in questa fam. la dignità di maresciallo del Conclave. Fabio fu papa col nome di Alesssandro VII, quattro furono vescovi, ed uno gran maestro dei cav. di Malta.
