E' manifestata la presenza della famiglia nell'antica Dertona sin dall' XI sec.: in tale epoca, e forse anche prima, trasferendosi dal Milanese si attribuì il nome della città d'origine come cognome denominandosi a volte De Majolanis altre De Mediolani e Da Milanis. Non tardò a primeggiare ed a partecipare nel 1122 alla costituzione del Comune Signorile di Tortona retto da quaranta famiglie patrizie tra le più ricche e potenti del contado; nello stesso anno uno dei suoi figli migliori, Opizzo, è eletto console: uomo di grande ingegno e di somma accortezza fu il primo tortonese rieletto alla carica consolare nel 1132 e nuovamente nel 1138.
