Fu capo-stipite un Giovanni gentiluomo ungherese che viveva intorno al 1200. Un Nicolò trasferì la sua dimora a Venezia dov'ebbe la carica di piovego. Antonio suo figlio andò a stabilirsi a Siena, e quindi a Meldola in Romagna, dove un Pietro, valoroso guerriero, mastro di campo dei Guelfi, liberò la città dall'assedio dei Visconti, per cui fu insignito da Galeotto Malatesta della nobiltà di Cesena ed eletto membro del Consiglio. I discendenti di Pietro formarono due rami, uno dei quali passò a Reggio Emilia e si estinse verso la fine del secolo XVII, e l'altro nel 1514 pose stanza in Ravenna, dove si suddivise in altri rami, quattro dei quali sono tuttora fiorenti. In Ravenna ebbero i G. la cittadinanza, la nobiltà e il seggio in senato: ottennero inoltre il patriziato romano dal Pontefice Paolo V nel 1605, confermato da Benedetto XIV nel 1746.
