Originaria di Monselice nel Padovano, e conosciuta prima col nome di Bernardini, la si trova stabilita nella fine del XIV secolo in Maderno, quivi conosciuta col nome della sua patria di origine. Bernardino di Bortolo spese tutta la sua vita in prò della patria caldeggiando premurosamente l'annessione della Riviera di Salò alla Repubblica di Venezia presso la quale fu poi avvocato ed ambasciatore. Stimato e bene accetto al Senato ed ai Dogi, ottenne il 6 novembre 1440, col consenso della Riviera, in feudo nobile, parte delle sostanze, pel diritto annuo di ducati 70, sequestrate a Nicolò Zacara da Malcesine. Bortolo II, dottore in legge ed avvocato di grido, fu oratore a Venezia nel 1476 e vicario di Maderno nel 1501; Leonardo fratello del precedente, sindaco della patria nel 1447.
