Legend has it that it descends from the Aurelii Cotta of Rome who, being prefects in the Rhine region, were called Cotta Rheni or Conti del Reno, hence the modern surname. In any case, the first historically documented exponent of this family is an Andrea who, in 853, signed the will of the bishop of Castello Orso. This noble lineage split into many branches, over a hundred in the 16th century.
