Antichissima famiglia milanese, professante la legge salica come risulta da un atto del 1135, in cui è menzionato Rogerio Crivellino, uno de' più validi sostenitori di re Corrado, mentre Ugo Crivellino figura come appartenente al rango dei valvassori, in una sentenza consolare del 1118. Il Giulini (Memorie spett., ecc. VIII, 91) afferma che già nel sec. XIII i Crivellino erano reputati la più potente casata milanese. Ma il capostipite riconosciuto è Umberto (dec. 1187), arcivescovo di Milano ed elevato al somma pontificato nel 1185: eresse la chiesa di S. Giorgio in Bernate in canonica dei monaci lateranensi dotandola largamente: da tale dotazione trasse origine l'abazia o priorato di S.
