Famiglia assai illustre ed antica cagliaritana, originaria di S.Remo, le cui notizie risalgono al secolo XVII. Un Giovanni Agostino, in quegli anni, si stabilì a Cagliari per ragioni commerciali; suo figlio Francesco sposò una Ventimiglia, facendo acquistare alla famiglia, già ricca, posizione e lustro. I suoi figli diedero vita a tre rami diversi: da Agostino, e da Francesco discesero due rami che si estinsero nel corso del secolo XVIII. Giuseppe, l'altro dei figli di Giovanni Agostino, ottenne il cavalierato ereditario nel 1753. Egli entrò in possesso dell'ufficio ereditario di depositario del monte Numario; suo figlio Michele nel 1799 ottenne la nobiltà per i meriti acquisiti nella difesa di Cagliari dai Francesi nel 1792.
