Die Überlieferung besagt, dass es als Zweig der Adelsfamilie Como entstand, was ein sehr häufiges Phänomen in der neapolitanischen Sprache ist, der Übergang von "o" zu Diphthong "uo". Und dies wird weiter durch die fast vollständige Ähnlichkeit zwischen den von den beiden Familien erhobenen Armen bestätigt, mit Ausnahme des Metalls der Sterne, Silber im Cuomo und Gold im Como. So stammt die Familie Como, später auch Cuomo, ursprünglich aus der gleichnamigen lombardischen Stadt und hatte als Stammvater den Ritter Riccano, Herrn von Albignano. Die Familie will im Gefolge der Anjou, anlässlich der Eroberung des Königreichs 1266 durch König Karl I. von Anjou, mit dem besagten Riccano nach Neapel gezogen sein.
