Antica ed illustre famiglia di Perugia, che ha per capostipite Uberto, vissuto circa il 970 e che alcuni vollero discendessero dai marchesi di Monferrato mentre vari documenti proverebbero la sua origine sassone. Comunque i figli di Umberto ebbero dominio sulla terra di Fratta, oggi Umbertide, che nei documenti di quel tempo in altri posteriori appare sempre chiamata: "Fracta filiorum Uberti". Questa casata fra il XII e XIII secolo si divise in quattro rami, dei quali il primogenito restò in Perugia e gli altri si stabilirono a Orvieto, a Gubbio e a Ragusa in Dalmazia. Di questi il ramo di Orvieto e di Gubbio si estinsero e quello di Ragusa nel 1100 si trasferì a Venezia, dando origine all'illustre famiglia Renier, alla quale appartenne Paolo, penultimo doge di quella Repubblica.
